To be as prolific as a group like big long sun is no mean feat. In recent years the speed in which media is consumed has increased exponentially. More work must be produced at faster rates to feed appetites perpetually whetted. This can lead to a drop in the quality of artistic output, with creators becoming more focused on producing ‘anything’ as opposed to ‘something’.
This couldn’t be further from the truth when addressing Brighton’s big long sun. Spearheaded by Jamie Broughton, the coastal 8-piece psych-pop megalodon have released two stunning LPs and an EP in the last year alongside sold out shows and heralded festival features. On their latest single, ‘my stars aligning’, big long sun continue to prove that the pool of ideas they draw from is never dry, but deep, fruitful and full of whimsy.
Atop clanking drums, accordions and clarinet, ‘my stars aligning’ shifts between an ‘ahh’ based singalong and a candid, solo-era John Lennon groover. Inherently a classic pop song about lost-and-found love, the lofi production and diverse arrangements are warming and endearing, evoking the DIY ethics of bands from the Elephant 6 catalogue.
At its core, ‘my stars aligning’, is a heartwrenching slice of timeless psych-pop, showcasing an artist in full creative flow. big long sun are uncompromising and wholly exciting – it is a joy to see them flourish in so many rich colours.
