Listen: Brooklyn’s Water From Your Eyes Share ‘Barley’ and Announce New Album

Formed in Chicago, but now based in Brooklyn, new Matador signees Water From Your Eyes release the hypnotic “Barley” – the first glimpse of their forthcoming album ‘Everyone’s Crushed’, due 28th May.

The duo of Rachel Brown (they/them) and Nate Amos (he/him) seem hellbent on their mission to become the coolest kids around. Coming across like Micachu & the Shapes but sizzled through a time loop and clotted in chrome, it’s all packaged here in this dizzying three minute trance of grimy pop dystopia: the sheer inanity of instagram/tik-tok hyper-stimulation; the hedonistic soul-wreckage of modern metropoli; the seriously cool noises you can make with synthesisers.

Nonchalantly capturing this perplexing fusion of monotony and euphoria that characterises day-to-day digitised living, ‘Barley’ is a track of endless circuits spiraling, crystallizing, flourishing. Layer upon unlikely layer dancing in and out of rhythm’s orbit, around the aloof, deadpan monotone vocal, conjoining, disbanding, each one as left field and deliciously sublime as the next.

1.2.3.4. You’re cool. You count mountains.
