Listen: First Baby Strange bring us brand new track ‘Young Team’

Glasgow’s lineage of musicians, from The Pastels to Orange Juice, all seem to adhere to the same rulebook, boldly entitled, “speak your mind”. Perhaps it’s the certain hardened appearance of the city which directly influences their sound or the opinionated nature somewhat entrenched in its roots. Either way, Baby Strange make it clear that they don’t like to stray too far from that forthright narrative.

Since 2013, Baby Strange’s frustrated brand of social commentary is still refreshingly intact and perhaps more prevalent than ever on their new track, Young Team. The third single to be released from their impending EP ‘Extended Play’, Young Team cites growing up in Glaswegian gang culture where ‘young teams’ or more aptly, teenagers, “fight to escape boredom and disassociation with their surroundings.” Over hints of reggae-dub harking to the Clash’s Sandinista era, Johnny Madden intones “where do you come from? what is your problem?” before the song takes us to classic Baby Strange territory; a gut-punching, sing-along chorus with fire in its belly.

It’s best to perceive ‘Young Team’ as an extension of the ethos that is behind Extended Play, which primarily explores the themes of teenage violence, Scottish Independence and disaffected youth. Never have we seen Baby Strange so embroiled in the class war and it’s great to welcome them to the party.

Extended Play is released on 14th July via Public Records.
