London’s Folly Group unleash the scintillating afro punk of ‘Big Ground’ and announce debut album ‘Down There!’ – due 12th January 2024.
A firebomb of crackling candy running rings of pleasure around your senses; jerking, grooving and vibrating within it’s every fiber and sinew; the latest from Folly Group is as old-school and direct as it feels roaringly modern.
Launching itself from time-fracturing dungeon-like techno, before snapping into a percussive and jazzy afro-punk frenzy, ‘Big Ground’ impressively squeezes all the rhythmic matrices of a Remain In Light, say, within a punk forthrightness and electronic experimentalism. Just like previous single ‘Strange Neighbour’, released this August, ‘Big Ground’ – despite all its ravishing intricacies, keeps itself true to the regimen of pithy and punchy three-minute pop. All proclamations of wanting to be buried in the ground barked at us here – sizzling as they do atop the most incendiary collection of rhythms and riffs – feel less a deathly cry for help and more a celebratory dance on behalf of anxiety’s release.
As the opener, we’re informed, of their upcoming album, we can only lick our lips with the prospect of further delights to follow in its wake – what’s been teased so far has been just so daring and insanely listenable.
Folly Group – ‘Down There!’ is out on January 12th. Pre order here.
