Rhythm bandits Folly Group are back with a new single ‘I Raise You (The Price of Your Head)’.
After a successful debut EP (‘Awake and Hungry’), Folly Group have announced follow up, ‘Human and Kind’. Inaugurated by ‘I Raise You (The Price of Your Head)’, the single doesn’t signal a dramatic change in direction, but rather an assertive drive forwards.
Despite a 7-month stretch release-free, the new track doesn’t disappoint. The chorused, hollowed out guitars dance and race alongside the spinning synths. With Richard Hell articulations, they spasm and howl, while the percussion confidently slices through the mix – the driving force behind the musics jittery element.
The track grows into a frenetic build of intensity as the vocal tagline syncs up with the beat (a forceful layering of percussive elements). The shift from wonky to thunderous is somewhat disorientating, but it only serves to build the tension and keep your focus locked in. It’s worth keeping in mind that despite the seriousness, there’s a layer of play to it. The James Chance-like rhythms are similarly anxious and tight. Moving to it is irresistible and that is key. Without the push to dance, it’d risk stiffness.
As another danceable scorcher, ‘I Raise You (The Price of Your Head)’ is another worthy entrant into the expanding Folly Group discography. They do everything a bit differently and it’s that which makes their music such a force.
