Bubble, bubble, toil and trouble — Pulse, Pose, Position!
The new single, ‘Pulse, Pose, Position’, by Glasgow risers Tanzana is alchemical, theatrical, and perfectly witchy for the current zeitgeist of modern mystical beings.
The song perfectly encapsulates a ritualistic, melodic celebration of “nurturing your inner child, to cradle the envy of youth and innocence as we grow old, reliving glorified memories of childhood.”
This sentiment can be found in the experimentation and playfulness we hear in the vocals. The theatrical and eccentric breaths that inflect intermittently throughout the song add a playful notion to what is otherwise a thick and heavy track. Backed by heaving instrumentals, the result is a melodic, hypnotic, spell-binding composition.
It is ethereal yet earthy. There is a whimsical nature to the performance, a toying with vocality, yet there is also rooted, grounded weight in the resonance of the vocals. This contrast reflects the feeling of holding age old wisdom, as if rooted to the ground like an ancient oak tree, bearing the fruits of your labour, while the young sapling still remains adrift.
While the vocals are extremely powerful and certainly drive the song, it is the breath that transforms the track from being a stand alone composition taken at face value into a living breathing organism.
It is the perfect follow-on from their debut single ‘Covet’, released last year, which was also packed with shimmering guitars, melodic bass lines, and delicate drum sequences.
There is an intimacy and vulnerability still unravelling within the band, and as they grow ever more powerful I suspect that this vulnerability will evolve into something unstoppable.
