Longtime readers of So Young will recall that somewhere between the full length interviews inside the print magazine you’d find a section called ‘Who Are You?’. Between 2017 and 2019 this feature introduced the likes of Fontaines D.C., Squid, Dry Cleaning and plenty more. Quite often for their first ever print feature. Earlier this year we decided to bring it back. Print readers, you’ll know this already.
Who Are You? introduces you to the brand new bands/artists who we feel should be on your radar, the ones currently playing tiny rooms but not for long. Leeds based Electronic-Noise-Pop band Bathing Suits have been exciting us since joining us at The Elephants Head, Camden back in June, and since then have released their addictive single, ‘I Can Be A Freak’- a track we described as ‘promising a whole new dedication to the club, and to the humble guitar’. With new shows being announced, and inevitable new releases on their way, the time felt right to get to know Bathing Suits a little better.
Introducing Bathing Suits…
Hello there, could you tell us who you are, where you’re from and the music you make?
We are the teen pop sensations Bathing Suits. We live in Leeds and we make dance-noise.
What have you been up to lately?
Recently we’ve been working on our new double A side single ‘I Can Be A Freak’ and spending a lot of long hours on the mega bus up to the big smoke playing shows at the windmill, shacklewell etc .
What led you to start writing and performing songs, and what brought you together?
Two of us run a promotion company together called wisecrack. Our first gig featured two of our old bands, it was also both bands last show. We had a shared love of noise music and needed something to do so we got cracking. the penny properly dropped for the band watching Gilla Band and psychotic monks play together in Sheffield.
Could you tell us the story behind a notable song from the set?
Our closing song ‘covered in shit’ was wrote because George got shat on by a bird
Could you tell us something you really love?
patrick thomas, mabgate bleach, private reg, dj subaru and all our lovely friends
Could you tell us something you really hate?
Ugly clothes, guitar solos, wetherspoons
