Longtime readers of So Young will recall that somewhere between the full length interviews inside the print magazine you’d find a section called ‘Who Are You?’. Between 2017 and 2019 this feature introduced the likes of Fontaines D.C., Squid, Dry Cleaning and plenty more. Earlier this year we decided to bring it back. Print readers, you’ll know this already.
Who Are You? introduces you to the brand new bands who we feel should be on your radar, the ones currently playing tiny rooms but not for long. London’s Domina have finally started sharing their debut material (you may have caught them at our We Are So Young event back in February) and we thought the time was right to ask them the basics. Introducing…Domina.
Hello there, could you tell us who you are, where you’re from and the music you make?
We’re Domina there’s three of us: Jude, Anders & Liv. We’re from London and we make electronic music.
What have you been up to lately?
Recently just lots of stuff around our EP coming out later this year. We just played our debut single release at Young Space and we were fortunate enough to get some studio time there too for a few days. Just lots of playing, writing, recording, gigging. We have some exciting gigs on the horizon too.
What led you to start writing and performing songs?
I guess it’s just something that all of us have always done. Jude and Anders have been playing music together for half a decade and Liv joined last year. We realised our voices just worked really well together which I reckon is why we settled so comfortably into this lineup. We all write our own bits and it’s just very natural and easy the way we all create together.
Who Are You? in print. Issue Fifty-Seven. Sold Out.
Could you tell us the story behind a recent single?
‘Apathy’ is our debut single and an introduction to our sound. Lyrically it’s quite conversational and broken up. Anders has a notes page with phrases from conversations that stand out and that built the foundation for the lyrics. It’s mainly guitar based which we’ve been moving away from in our live set as we’ve been getting more experimental with the synths and electronic elements. ‘Apathy’ leans into that gently, a teaser of what’s to come.
Could you tell us something you really love?
We love our little singing bell hearts that we use in our live set set ups <3
Could you tell us something you really hate?
Spots. We’re a stripes trio for sure.
The most welcome and unwelcome comparison you’ve ever had?
Welcome: Broadcast / Beat Happening / Stereolab / TV Girl
Unwelcome: Honestly can’t think of any – everyones been really nice
Stage or Studio?
stage – a lot of our songs are quite atmospheric and some we improvise live. You can only really create those atmospheres once in the space you’re in and it’s such a great feeling when you and the crowd are locked in to what you’re creating knowing it can’t be replicated like that again.
What can we be excited for from you in the next 12 months?
We have our EP coming out in october and we’re already working on the second one. We’re really excited to just keep releasing and performing. We’ve really loved playing in art spaces where we can add lots of visual elements so more of that. Expect lots of gigs, lots of music and lots of visual stuff.
