Leeds duo Troutflies share new single ‘Pugh’. Repetitive guitar chords meet toy melodicas in this slice of woozy, dreamlike surrealism.
Having been born out of Leeds’ flourishing DIY scene, and with the band now having signed to one of the city’s most exciting emerging labels in Private Regcords, Troutflies are establishing themselves as one of the most captivating acts around. And now with new album, ‘Wild Troutflies’, set for release in October, the duo are set to cement themselves as one of the country’s most alluring prospects.
Recorded in band member Guy Godivala’s London flat, ‘Pugh’ evokes a real lo-fi charm – simultaneously, you can hear both the bedroom walls in which it was formed and the new world it has created. Musically, ‘Pugh’ nods to the alternative psychedelic and folk heroes of yester-year (think Bill Callahan, or Syd Barrett) or the more modern jangle of Sharp Pins whilst still managing to carve its own path. Reuben Pugh’s lyrics, nominally about a night out in a church, but really about so much more, form the song’s emotional core. A nightclub in a church has never sounded so strange, and yet so enthralling.
