Listen: Lipworms Share ‘Handshake’ as Slow Dance Announce ‘Slow Dance ’23’ New Music Compilation

Slow Dance Records are back with their 8th annual new music compilation – Slow Dance ‘23 – aiming to celebrate, support, and showcase the best new alternative artists. LIPWORMS’ debut single ‘Handshake’ features in the collection’s first instalment.

Portsmouth’s LIPWORMS have released ‘Handshake’, their contribution to the latest compilation from Slow Dance Records. Forming last Summer in Portsmouth, LIPWORMS christened their early days with a series of live shows and support slots across London and the South Coast. Now platformed by the yearly and consistently impressive collection of Slow Dance favourites, ‘Handshake’ also doubles as their debut single.

The quartet’s first release is nearly five-minutes of industrial techno-psych, aligning with recent experimental dance sounds from the likes of SCALER and PVA whilst echoing the legacy of giants such as Underworld. Of the single, vocalist/guitarist Chris Williamson shared that “‘Handshake’ started out as a noisy 15 minute live jam. Disjointed acid house with guitar noise and distorted screams over the top […] We like to think of it as the sound of the internet screaming”. The track comes with an absurd and illusory music video, filmed “around a pretty bleak civic centre on a gloomy day in Portsmouth covered in wires with pockets full of soil”.

‘Handshake’ features in the first instalment of Slow Dance Records’ newest compilation, Slow Dance ‘23. Previously featuring the likes of black midi, Sorry, and Folly Group, the annual collections are widely known as a celebration and predictor of the best new alternative music. Slow Dance ‘23 will reportedly be the label’s most expansive edition yet, spanning 18 tracks; the full project will be released on February 6th. Pre order.
