It’s hard to believe that Dead Pretties are only now releasing their second single, the follow up to Social Experiment. One of the tightest, most ferocious, and most chaotic live bands to emerge from the so called South London scene, Confidence sees them abandon the woozy garage rock anthemia of their debut single for something a bit more energetic, something that froths at the mouth.
A rumbling bassline that recalls the animalistic depravity of the Birthday Party is mangled with a squealing guitar that sounds like a gazelle in a lion’s den, screaming out for help, whilst frontman Jacob Slater barks and howls; “confidence! That’s what we want!” An intense ransack of a song, Confidence sees Dead Pretties put out their most focused and forthright material to date, evidence enough that they’re going to be headlining festivals next year. Lyrics that mock the vacuous nature of late stage capitalism are howled out with such vigour that they’ll shake you right to the core.
The trio’s live show is one of the best in the business, a large-scale ritual of communal depravity; so just how many new fans will they pick up now that this reptilian garage colossus has been captured on record? Only time will tell. But for now we can have only Confidence. Confidence sees the band sneer at vapid and dumbed down news, and a widespread ignorance of issues that carry actual weight, so your next step is obvious, right? Don’t listen to Buzzfeed, listen to the Dead Pretties.
