With a run of shows under their belt, and a Green Man Festival slot coming in August, experimental London duo Curbside Lambsear – aka Magdalena McLean and Annabelle Mödlinger of the Umlauts (find the former violining for Caroline too) – are embarking on some wistful sonic explorations with debut single ‘Man The Door’.
Releasing on nascent underground touchstone Scenic Route, ‘Man The Door’ effects a kind of Tara Clerkin trio-style of winding and organic trip-hop, where time-stretchingly hypnotic rhythms are gently perforated by strange noises in the periphery: jarring vocal effects, organ sounds rumbling just within earshot, or a synth-squeak entering the chat. Lilting and magnetic, it’s hard not to listen to Curbside Lambsear, as I do now, at the height of a British heatwave, and attach to the music a summer solstice serenity. That specific kind when you lie back, face the sun, close your eyes, and meditate into transportative bliss as the heat licks your eyelids, and your bare, sun-creamed skin caresses the yellowing grass.
