Listen: London’s Sorry Return with ‘Waxwing’ Ahead of Tour with Fontaines D.C.

Sorry have returned. For some, like myself, this means something. It may not feel as if two years have passed since Sorry released, their last ‘Anywhere But Here’, at least for those for whom it has remained as a part of their permanent rotation, it returns exciting the sensations or desire to listen to it; these desires may not occur cyclically, not belonging to a cycadean or liberatory rhythms, rather they are inspired through experience – a desire to return to the known, the emotions to which Sorry’s last album resonated with.

The notions of desire here may appear initially out-of-place, perhaps pretentious, but rooting this commentary in the nature of desire comes from the instigation of desire that is central to the song, ‘Waxwing’. The song is an interpolation of the lyrics from Toni Basil’s ‘Hey Mickey’. “Mickey is desire?”, among other chopped up vocals bring humanity to the futurist leaning tendencies of the song. Synthetisers create a dystopian sensation, a sci-fi set of strangeness, a post- sensical exploration through the decaying metropole, meaning in maddening, speed induced strikes of static and spectral tones. Not quite sure what it was that was forgotten, or where is next, in the nexus of nothingness there can be only now, disillusions and disorientation.

Partnered with a music video that mixes low- and high-resolution footage, that inspects human imperfection with imagery that seeks to show how desire alters perception and the very reality one can find themselves in. Sorry will, I hope, continue to release music in preparation for another album. For now, they will be embarking on tour support Fontaines D.C. across their full UK and Ireland Tour.
