It’s an easy job introducing Melbourne Garage-pop quartet the gnomes, because new single ‘Magic Man’ does it all for them.
Amid a dizzying sea of shag cuts and tightly groomed moustaches, the rum mania of ‘Magic Man’ sounds like King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard taking on The Monkees, piled in with all the goofball meme-ry of The Chats. Coming all together in a sort of hyper-accelerated skate punk joyride, the music is as mushroom-comfy as it is graze-your-knee-on-the-tarmac deadly.
Celebrating their release of new EP ‘More’ (due 13th May) They’re coming to the UK next month for a whistlestop tour of Great Escape, and some headline shows. I have no doubt that beers will be gulped and bewildered smiles will spill over sticky floors.
“Magic Man is about this old man who lives next door to me who I’ve always known as The Wizard because I never knew his real name,” explains lead singer Jay Millar. The ‘Magic Man’ in question is played excellently in the accompanying track’s music video by friend-of-the-band Stu, who was “coming off a massive bender”. Watch below.
