Nottingham’s high-flying quartet Divorce has released their latest single ‘Birds’ after signing to Gravity. The motivational track shifts focus between patterned shirts and the band’s frequent subject of murder, simultaneously bending their sound to suit the mood.
Previously the band have inhabited analogies beyond the implicit, but the protagonist of ‘Birds’ is as ‘individual’ as us all; well intended but disconnected, forced to resort to sarcasm and intrusive thoughts. The accuracy with which Divorce use their lyrics and timbres to world-build around the message of ‘I wanna be beautiful/I wanna be good to myself’, makes it all the more meaningful when sung by vocalists Felix Mackenzie-Barrow and Tiger Cohen-Towell.
Speaking on the track, Mackenzie-Barrow says; ‘I was carrying a lot of insecurity that felt like it was piling in on me from all angles but this song was an attempt to reshape those feelings into something positive.’
With a confident start on their new label, and further defining what a Divorce song can sound like, ‘Birds’ is guaranteed to become a fan favourite down the line.
