The Itch, known for their dance-punk-club hybrid music, have released their latest single ‘Drugdealer’ – a change in tempo from their usual sound, made to soundtrack your smoke break on a night out.
Distorted synths cover the sound of vocalist Simon Tyrie’s reckoning, “if you want me, I could be your drugdealer”, as the lyrics delve into the feelings of performing for your partner to keep them happy. Explaining the background of writing the track, Tyrie shared “I was listening to a lot of Elton John and Bernie Taupin songs at the time of writing and really wanted to write a song that dealt with metaphor like ‘Rocket Man’ or ‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road’ – the idea of a love song from the perspective of a drug dealer hit me when I was buying a pack of cigarettes for a friend at Wide Awake festival”.
‘Drugdealer’ is a step back from your usual expectations of The Itch, but the duo perfectly keep you enticed throughout the single – which comes before the release of their debut album, ‘It’s The Hope That Kills You’ due to be released in April.
