‘On The Radio’ is a pretty fetching title for the brand new single from Dorking boys Vinyl Staircase, if only because it’s an undiluted power-pop smash.
Unapologetically boasting some mean guitar solos alongside stadium-sized harmonies to really hit the emphatic feeling home, the four-piece have returned with a real sense of vigour, eschewing their psych penchants for something more cheeky yet decisively biting that’ll no doubt have their name spread around to a person or two when festival season comes around.
Mike Thorpe aims for the skies with his enraptured vocal, purposefully engaged and emotive as he sings the laconic line “we were set in stone, it felt so good”. Taking from the rule book of the golden-era of songwriting, their sudden key changes and dramatic swings in melody are just what they need to be, sharp, direct, and brimming with unambiguity. What’s most pleasing is its not trying to be anything it isn’t, it’s an uncomplicated and optimistic single that ensures the band have a direct hit on their hands.
